Minnesota Genetic Counselor Licensure FAQs

What is the processing time to obtain a license once your packet is submitted?

Two and a half months (often the turnaround time is under 2 ½ months)

See License details https://mn.gov/elicense/a-z/?id=1083-
257076#/list/appId//filterType//filterValue//page/1/sort//order/
Where do I find the fees associated with either a new license application or a renewal?

These can be found on the MN eLicensing website under license details
https://mn.gov/elicense/a-z/?id=1083-
257076#/list/appId//filterType//filterValue//page/1/sort//order/

When do I need to renew my license?

Renewal is annual and due on the last day of one’s birth month. For instance, if your
birth month is February, your annual license renewal occurs the last day of February. If
your birth month is August, your annual license renewal occurs the last day of August.
This is similar to other licenses regulated by the MN Board of Medical Practice= See

How many Continuing Education Units does one need to obtain annually?

A licensed genetic counselor must complete a minimum of 25 hours of NSGC- or ABMGapproved
continuing education units every two years. If a licensee's renewal term is
prorated to be more or less than one year, the required number of continuing education
units is prorated proportionately. See

We have just hired a new graduate, do we need to wait for that individual to obtain their MN
Board of Medical Practice genetic counseling license before they can provide genetic counseling
services?

Please see https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/147F.05

No, a new graduate can provide services within the first six months of graduation as
long as they are under the direct supervision of a licensed genetic counselor or physician
who is on duty in the assigned patient care area. This individual must be identified by
the title “genetic counseling intern” until their license is obtained.

If an individual is new to practicing in the state of MN, do they need to obtain a MN genetic
counselor license before they can practice?

Yes, unless the individual is a visiting ABGC- or ABMG-certified genetic counselor
working as a consultant in MN who permanently resides outside of MN, or the
occasional use of services from organizations from outside of MN that employ ABGC- or
ABMG-certified genetic counselors may practice for 30 days total within one calendar
year without obtaining MN genetic counselor licensure. Please note, the certified
genetic counselors from outside of MN working as a consultant in this state must be
licensed in their state of residence if licensure is available in their state of residence.

Please see https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/147F.05

If an individual has graduated, but failed to obtain a license in the state of MN within 6 months
of graduation, does this individual need to cease practice under the title of “genetic counseling
intern” with supervision until a MN genetic counselor license is obtained?

Yes. The individual would need to cease practice until MN genetic counselor licensure is
approved and obtained.
